Of the new satellite cranes Renttimä-crane was the first one to commence autumn migration already in the beginning of August. Between 19th and 29th August it has been staging in the cultivated fields by the Siikajoki-river 320 km apart its breeding grounds.
Having lingered for three weeks on the cultivated fields by the Siikajoki-river, Renttimä continued its autumn migration by taking a 650 km leap to the SSW. The crane was located foraging 1,7 km apart Olli-crane in Matsalu area. Renttimä kept feeding until 7 pm and was thirty minutes later located at the night roost Põgari-Sassi, where also Olli-crane has been nighting over for 8 days. So far Renttimä has traveled 964 km of which only 10 km have been extra. On 18th September Renttimä changed the night roost and stayed overnight by the Suitsu-jõgi-river approximately 20 km to the SSE of the Põgari-Sassi.
On 29th September Renttimä was located staying overnight at the fish ponds amidst the Hortabagy national park, Hungary. The crane is currently 2213 km away from the breeding grounds in Finland.
For the next one and half month Renttimä’s night locations arrived from 5 to 10 km to the east of Kondas-fishing pond where Matti and Aino spent their nights.
Then the crane headed 140 km to SSW to the same area around Kardoskyti Feherto in southern Hungary, where Matti-crane was dwelling during the previous autumn 2007 and is also at the moment.
After the rains stopped Renttimä left Hungary and flew 100 km ending up to a known staging are of cranes at Slano Kopovo, 2. 3. N-Serbia. According to a Serbian crane expert Kristian Barna, the lake has dried due to an exceptionally warm spell in previous summer and this autumn, and so far the number of cranes has been low.
Kristian visited the lake prior to Christmas and estimated a total of 10 000 cranes staying overnight by standing in the shallow water of the Slano Kopovo. Then Renttimä’s night locations constantly came from the N-part of the lake for one month until a cold spell reached N-Serbia on December 25th 2008.
On December 27th 2008 also Renttimä headed together with thousands of counterparts WSW of Slano Kopovo and became the first Finnish crane found from Bosnia Hertzegovina. The crane stayed overnight in the vicinity of vast fish ponds.
Two days later Renttimä had headed 30 km N to the very same fish ponds in Croatia were Olli was already located on December 28th 2008. Renttimä has thrived there ever since and was located at the ponds between Brodski Stupnik and Bebrina also on January 11th 2009.
