An adult male Mauri left his breeding grounds by the 14th August and has since thrived in a flock of 200 individual cranes in Tervola-assembly area 75 km apart the summer territory in Rovaniemi-municipality.
Mauri-crane who almost lingered 1½ month in Tervola, Finland was located at the Põgari-Sassi roost, Matsalu, Estonia on 1st October. Mauri appears to be in the same flock with Matti-crane and using the same night roost and foraging grounds as did Olli and Renttimä earlier in this autumn. Mauri has now moved 895 km to the south of the breeding bog in Rovaniemi, Finland.
On 3rd October Mauri had left the Matsalu staging area and headed 25 km to
the north to Haapsalu bay staging area. The night roost of the crane
situated by the Lyckholmi-lagoon in Silma Nature Reserve. Altogether Mauri
spent one and half weeks in Haapsalu area and two and half weeks in
Estonia.
On 15th October Mauri flew 270 km to the south upwind. On the next rainy
day he was located by the Lielupe-river, Latvia next to the residence of
the Latvia’s first president.
Two days later he headed 200 km to the southeast descended in the vicinity of Elektrènai-town, in Lithuania. Then the migration has been ceased for the moment.
On 30 October Mauri was surprisingly located in Kaliningrad area, Russia 150 km to the WSW of the last location in Lithuania. The crane appeared to return to the likely routes leading to Hungary or western-Europe. Interestingly, the crane is currently on the same area where Matti-crane stopped over during the spring migration 12th April 2008. During the next two weeks the amount of data plunged dramatically. However, the scarce data on Mauri received indicate that the crane has unfortunately perished soon after arrival to Kaliningrad area, Russia.
