Matti-crane commenced its autumn migration in late August by flying 270 kilometres to the southwest. There it foraged in the cultivated fields of Muhos-municipality for one month prior continuing migration circa 600 kilometres to the southern most tip of Finland on 28 September.
Having rested one and half days in a military area it continued in adverse wind conditions over the Gulf of Finland to the north-western Estonia, an area where thousands of cranes gather from Finland and western Russia. After 9 days the crane flew 370 km further to Lithuania and on 13 October continued with one flight (880 km) to a major stop-over site in Hajdu Bihar area in Hungary. It is likely that Matti-crane will stay there from three to six weeks prior to flying to the wintering grounds in northern Africa.
Between 14 October and 5 December all of the locations received agglomerated at two separate overnight sites and foraging areas in Hungary. Matti-crane spent the first 35 days in Hortobagyi national park together with tens of thousands conspecifics. Then it flew circa 120 km to the Körös-Maros national park and thrived there prior moving to Serbia on 6 December. It is possible that the crane will also linger in Serbia several weeks before continuing the trip in particular should the winter be mild.
